    Por L.CHAMBERLAIN, JOSHUA

    Sobre

"Abraham Lincoln: A View from the Field" by Joshua L. Chamberlain is an look at President Lincoln as a man and as a president faced with a tremendous challenge----an insurrection of states----and no clear path to pursue under existing constitutional law. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828-1914),was a college professor from the state of Maine who volunteered during the American Civil War to join the Union Army. Although he had no earlier education in military strategies, he became a highly respected & decorated Union officer, reaching the rank of brevet Major-General. For his gallantry at Gettysburg, he was awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor. He was given the honor of commanding the Union troops at the surrender ceremony of General Robert E. Lee's Army at Appomattox. In all, Chamberlain served in 20 battles and numerous skirmishes. Cited for bravery four times, he had six horses shot from under him, and was wounded six times. In this short book of 7,300++ words, Chamberlain views Lincoln and the Civil War challenges he faced from both the point of a soldier and the point of a citizen of the U. S. He says Lincoln's greatness lay in his ability to face these challenges with his inner strength and ability to reason, while remaining within the law. A lesser man would have resorted to raw power and thereby damaged if not destroyed the very nation he was trying to save. A must read for the Civil War student interested in background material to understand the titanic struggle that was the Civil War.
